WPPR v5.8 sneak peek

Yeah, I haven’t gotten around to adding them, I just reran the code I already wrote. They’ve also only done one event that I can tell, so I’m not sure they qualify as a “farm” yet. Maybe we can get @FunWithBonus to publish an official definition?

(Draft definition of) WPPR Farm: a location which has multiple series of 4 or more full-field (64+ players) events that is NOT timed and located to connect with a major pinball show (e.g. TPF, FPF, Expo, etc.) or a “Major” tournament (e.g IFPA, The Open, EPC, or in prior years, Pinburgh or PAPA).

Lol at trying to suggest that having many events in one contiguous period isn’t farming if it’s connected to an “appropriate” event or “significant” tourney.

The PAPA world championships extended weekend was a great example of a type of farming. It was awesome.

No need to try to cast some negative light on holding as many comps as people can stand in short period of time. Play more pinball!

I view farming as a positive, good thing. And to me, it’s when you are able to have multiple “harvests” (full weekends of numerous tourneys) of WPPRtunities at a single venue, at least twice per year. Whether it’s 2 per weekend, or 10 per weekend. Fulda and D82 are simply the two biggest farms. And thank you, Tobias and Erik, for what you do.

My draft definition does not render an opinion on the merits of a WPPR farm, just what might constitute one. I plan to go to WI later this year myself. I would have gone to Fulda if the travel had been easier.

About the same amount of points as winning one Major under v5.8 rules

@BMU ''s draft definition is quite neutral, and @Snailman 's point is solid. I think we have two different connotations of “Farm” and "Harvest which may end up being merged into one:

The Farm as in the location holding the events
The Farm as in the events themselves (which may end up being the “harvest”)
The Harvest as in a Player’s results at that series of events

  • “The Summer harvest at the District 82 WPPR farm is August 12-14, 2022.”
  • “Who will have the best harvest at this Summer’s District 82 WPPR Farm?”

How many events over how many days would constitute a WPPR Farm
Would at least one of those days have to have two different events that start and finish on the same day?

Just a minute, fixing a typo

Net gain, so the points he earned was even higher than that. It’s good that the three remaining majors will at least be in the ball park of competing with the farms.

my apologies for reading between the lines in my interpretation

The key difference here, though, is the EV of any player in one Major – or even a New Certified+ – vs. the EV of 8-10 chances to get good WPPRs at a farm.
I look forward to seeing the impact of v5.8!

Good analysis.
Wow: 73% and 67% Efficiency% from Johannes and Daniele… once again: impressive!

If I’m looking at #16 (Eric) and #21 (Jason):

  • Eric’s got a nice variety of Stern Pro Circuit Events (Plus IFPA of course)
  • Jason’s basically winning everything at the Delaware Collective (Plus a few Pro Circuit Events)

Bummed to read PAPA being directly compared to all the current farming events.

The same event structure of PAPA was already in use when side tournaments were worth max 50% of main tournament (and three daily tournaments worth max 1/3 of that each). The tournament location and staff were fully capable of organizing this number of tournaments in the planned schedule without any compromises to the announced tournament formats or machines choices.

And most importantly, PAPA HQ was always open to anyone to enjoy the event and afaik no tournament there was ever sold out. The crew also kept expanding the event by adding more divisions to main tournament as the interest to the event kept growing.

Probably not the point of this thread, sorry about that. I just feel that with Replay FX no longer organizing its tournaments, we lost probably the most important organization making competitive pinball more visible and pinball being bigger and bigger every year with the biggest events being even bigger and more awesome than previous years. I’m worried that the current farming culture is driving competitive pinball to the opposite direction.

I think the issue comes from assigning a negative connotation to the term “wppr farm.” Personally, I don’t see a farm being a bad thing. I’m stuck in a WPPR desert and we’re starving for some fresh WPPRs.

When people are close to a WPPR farm, they are no doubt going to benefit. This is similar to people who are able to chase down wild WPPRs at all the big tourneys.

Yeah, looking at that card now I’m seeing why people are telling me to add Delaware to the list of farms. I was tripped up before because they don’t use a consistent naming scheme in IFPA, so it wasn’t as easy to detect.

I think there are players who are turned off by competitive pinball period, but I think you just have to look at District 82 to see that players like having constant competitive action. They’re getting 70 players consistently for bi-weekly Tuesday night match play tournaments that start at 6pm, and 35 for weekly friday 3-strikes tournaments (the worst format!!). These are player IDs 80000+ having become consistent participants.

I don’t think it is at all. It’s only making folks like me try and set this up in their towns. Rankings will always be improved and tweaked, but these farms are doing nothing but playing, promoting, and streaming competitive pinball, constantly. That will always be a good thing imo.

And nothing will ever be Pinburgh. That’s impossible. Hopefully they find a way to come back.

Again. LPA is not a WPPR farm. Their most recent weekend in April included one (1) pre tournament on Friday and then two (2) certified tournaments the rest of the weekend. That is hardly WPPR farming these days.

The main tournament that weekend included 18 four-player matches in qualifying (36 games toward TGP!) and did not use multi-matchplay. 24 players through to final rounds.

They hold two such weekends each year.
Not. WPPR. Farm.
