I hated it at first, but once I learned the shots better, my completion percentage went way up. Kind of like victory laps mid-game.
Is it harder on pros? Not sure I’ve tried it on a pro.

This is an amazing idea!
If you select competition mode from the attract mode selection screen, does that not turn off EBs?
player competition mode or settings menu competition mode does not change EB.
that is
competition install does + other game difficultly settings are set to harder then defaults
that is how competition mode worked on the older sega / de games and it also did things like changing coinage / free play based on that one that was picked.
Perhaps have Rampage end early if player fails to make any shots at a given location? More graceful way of timing it out if player chooses, and more challenging otherwise.
Also digging the idea of QR codes to disable EBs, set tournament mode, etc.
well I think stern needs to update the menu out of the old ported over DMD code and add other stuff before the QR code part.
Like maybe
save / load settings from usb
custom installs of settings sets.
timed pricing say have an half price happy hour / free play on an timer / etc.
now other stuff for tournaments like
have an limited ball search mode as an setting
even more control of tilt timings
maybe an way to disable modes that can end the game
etc
add an save state / load state and or rewind of an live game.
Because at the end of the evening, when the bar is closing, everyone has been drinking and people want to leave, the one thing that will inevitably be forgotten is to put back the settings on the 13 (or more) games that needed to have the EBs turned off (and tournament modes re-disabled, and buy-ins shut off etc.) because the league/tournament has 50 people and needs at least that many games for the event.
wait you have them on for tournament play?
Dunno TBH, but if they were on at a public location, I wouldn’t shut them off on a league night, I’d tell people if they used a buy in, they would be DQd.
This would be AMAZING.
The issue would be limiting said Setting adjustments to only those that could not be exploited by players to make the game easier or cheaper (free) to play, so Operators wouldn’t have to fear with someone messing with their property and earnings.
This. So true.
The only saving grace is that setting games back to Factory is suuuuuper easy: Installs, Factory. Done.
The issue would be for any ops/venues that have settings tweaked different than factory and want to preserve those.
so can’t add balls mid game / change # of balls
can’t change ball saver settings
can’t change difficultly
can’t disable / enable stuff
can’t change replay levels / settings
can’t change tilt settings.
maybe they can have an way to force tournament mode (Not player tournament) but the full one that may due more.
Yeah. It would be up to the OP to make the custom code active and what specifically that code would change.
If this was to become a thing, you don’t want to over complicate it. Have a small but important set of temporary adjustments that can only make the game harder, and that can only be invoked by scanning a competition QR code after the game is started but before first plunge. Operator can enable/disable this feature in setting, but if it’s benign enough, it could be shipped default ‘on.’
A player scanning the competition code would temporarily:
Set EBs to zero
Set ‘competition mode,’ if available in the code, to on (de-randomize events)
Perhaps disable chase balls (this is iffy as it affects the game operation, but OTOH it’s just the current game in progress)
Any other settings that most tournaments would want? All this would revert as soon as the current game ended.
coin door ball saver but there’s no reason to turn this off even in non tournament mode, even in casual play you don’t want players losing a ball cause a tech had to free a stuck ball.
chase balls should only ever be on in venues that don’t have full time techs on hand.
coin door ball saver is off by default.
for chase balls their is more then one level to that.
now the thing is tech or no tech should it at least try to unlock a ball / cycle the lock on games?
and in some cases even with an tech some times ball can in places where you need to kill the game to get it out
any time ball search releases locks it can cause extremely undesired tournament state. just watch travis’ game on godzilla from TPF for why. so if you have a tech better for the tech to open up a game and manually release things from the lock rather than get ball search to do so.
godzilla does have the lock issue like that but other games can kick out on ball at an time
The ones I’d be most concerned, from Operator perspective, would be:
and what about match %?
replay levels / points?
