ReplayFX/Pinburgh Tourist Advice

But they don’t appear to have the famous YS on the menu. You should be able to get one at a lot of places, though.

On the South Side, depends where you are. Near 24th St.is Doublewide Grill (owned by a pinball guy!) with decent American comfort food, salads, and great beer, and OTB Bicycle Cafe with lots of veggie stuff, great burgers (for your friends) and great beer.

On the other side near 13th St. I hear Doce Taqueria is pretty good (I’ve only been once, and liked it), they always have one vegan option on their small menu and they’re open way late.

Also, if you’re near The Pretzel Shop (between 23rd and 24th) they are open early and probably do an egg/cheese pretzel sandwich without meat (not sure, as I consider some combination of egg, pig, and cheese to be one of the perfect foods in the universe). Daytime hours and take-out only.

We just call it a salad. Or steak salad or something. If you have some free time check out Fat Head’s on the south side, they have all sorts of ridiculous and amazing combinations of meat, fries, and cheese.

Thats the one! Yea I remember us looking that up last year when we were looking for a yinzer fix and them not having it on the menu. I guess its a catering only thing.

I’ve been to the Doublewide for pre-pinburgh/papa stuff a few times and its a great place, but no PA salad :frowning: Last year we ended up at the Union Grill but, they only had steak salad :frowning:

I’ll keep looking. Those convention center floor snack bar salads are pricey

We’ve got a group hitting up the Pirates game on Wednesday night. It’s Star Wars night!

Just made plans with friends to check out Falling Water when I get in on that Wednesday. Never thought I’d have the chance!

Why does Kentuck Knob get no love? Falling water is cool and everyone should try to see it once. However, I have never heard anyone say when in Pittsburgh it is worth the drive to see Kentuck Knob.

I didn’t know about Kentuck Knob. Looks gorgeous too, but Falling Water is much more well known. I’ll throw that one out there to my friends, but I definitely also want to explore Pittsburgh while I have some free time outside of ReplayFX.

My opinion: Penn Brewery beer is solid but not spectacular. The food is skippable. I think the general consensus if you’re looking for German food is Max’s Allegheny Tavern a couple blocks west.

Nope, they actually put french fries on top of everything. Even salads!

The Pirates play the Wednesday before Pinburgh. One of the most beautiful ballparks in the country, and you can walk across the bridge to the game. If you have a remote interest in baseball I’d highly recommend it.

Kentuck Knob - I haven’t been since it didn’t open for tours until I was out of college, but I’ve heard that it’s just not as impressive. Not as old, not as significant, not as nice. It’s more of “if you’re over at Fallingwater…” https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g52340-d270752-r17634504-Kentuck_Knob-Chalk_Hill_Pennsylvania.html

When I went I did both, and KK is lovely. But I’m operating under the assumption that most people probably don’t have the deep undying emotional attachment to Frank Lloyd Wright that I do (I am actually taking special effort to get married at a FLW house) and while Kentuck Knob is lovely and amazing in many ways, lets face it. Its not Fallingwater. I was making a general assumption that the one would be more interesting to most people.

I’m planning to fly in on Monday (from the UK), and due to jet lag will probably spend the first couple of mornings wandering the streets in the early hours. Are there any recommendations for places that are open at crazy o’clock in the morning (4am or so). Similarly, any places to avoid at that time?

Also… I’m staying at the William Penn, and I found this subway map that suggests I can get to the Casino with one change of train http://pghbridges.com/pittsburghW/0584-4477/NSC-PAT-HiResMap.jpg
Does that seem about right?

No train change needed, and both lines run from the Steel Plaza stop to the Allegheny stop. Here’s a more current map. There are also no fares collected for that trip.
