I really improved on DMDs over previous 2 years, but I think that had to do with me playing much worse on day 1 more than me getting better at DMDs. Only took one zero on DMDs, and that was a “physical nature of the game” moment.
I joined the Pinburgh party for the first time this year. Here was my performance. You can kind of tell I got crappier as the sessions went on as I stopped taking pictures of the scores at the end I cannot wait for next year to redeem my poor play and have more data to compare to!!
I crushed the DMDs both days, and did equally poorly on the EMs. Including the DMDs in the late solid state category I went 36-9 on DMDs through the first 10 rounds. The big difference for me is that I played really poorly on solid states day 1 versus day 2. If I had played better I had opportunities for at least 1 more win on Sinbad, Funhouse, TX-Sector (took 3rd by less than 100k), Rollergames , and Powerplay.
In B finals I was lucky to play the same bank rounds 2-4. Then in the final 4 we switched banks and I bombed both DMDs. Still really happy with 4th in B.
Pinburgh was an amazing experience. I’ve been thinking about it at work all day and I can’t wait to go back. It’s pretty clear what I need to get better at as well. I’m excited to start improving on older games and see how high I can go next year!
Here is my breakdown. I took way too many zeros on the SS’s. Looks like I need to work on those a bit. Really pleased with the EMs. Gotta turn some of those 1’s into 2’s next year!
Had my most balanced year in terms of eras. I think my day 2 drop-off was more about consolidating my bad luck than anything else. I wasn’t playing like a world champ or anything, but had a lot of 0 or 1 flip balls unfortunately.
Looking at some of my ones and zeroes, many were in really close games. I left a multiball lit on ball 3 on four different games. Making those shots would have gained me 10 additional points. Hitting one good spinner rip on TX Sector would have gained me another 3. So…I was only five shots away from cruising into A finals.
IIRC, I won 8 total on DMDs (oof). I definitely remember a number of brick-drain combos on those. 3 on Ghostbusters from the video mode plunge. 16/15/16 on the other categories (iirc).
I won many more EM’s at pinburgh and almost no DMDs this year (including my one and only finals round [D]. Ironic, because there are mostly only DMDs to play in my town and next to no EMs (Kansas City).
I went 18-DMD, 16-EM, 14 Late SS, 17 Early SS. Surprisingly I only took a single zero on DMD and a single zero on EM’s. Solid states is where most of my zero’s came from: 3 on Late SS, 2 on Early SS.
18.6 on EMs. 13.7 on early SS. 15.6 on late SS. 17 on DMD.
Is this enough of a sample size to indicate that I need to improve on early solid states? I’m thinking it is.
All years have been between 11.5 and 16, so it’s pretty consistent. To me, it feels like I frequently get house balled, but I only get 2 other balls to make up for it (unlike EMs, where I get 4 other balls).
Dang. My weakness revealed. I’ll be practicing up between now and then.
Got any secrets to reveal for ESS success?
Oooo, this is an interesting wrinkle to look at.
Has anyone tried to look at their scoring by group as compared to the skill of the players in the group? You could use seed, or rating, or ranking…but some of that might be hard to come by for past years.
I spoke too soon… I read my sheet wrong. I was only 15 ESS and 21 LSS. I did get a 3 on every WPC game I played but struggled with Gottlieb and DE games because I rarely play them outside of tournaments. Need to bring up my early SS play too I guess!
