Had to rub my eyes twice when this came up.
I wonder. Who coined the term “grand champion” for pinball? And was it a horse guy?
I thought Whirlwind was the first game with a “Grand Champion”… so maybe Pat Lawlor?
After a bit of googling…
Looks like at least the world of judging livestock / steer used the term Grand Champion before Lawlor did in 1990 on Whirlwind.
I first found this article says it is from 1986: Texas Primer: The Grand Champion Steer – Texas Monthly
