Conflicting main and classics finals

The tournament must be open to anyone to play to be IFPA sanctioned.

If a rule for Tournament Y is “This isn’t open to anyone that is playing in Tournament X”, then it fails to meet the criteria of being open to all.

Is there anything that says you can’t schedule two tournaments at the exact same time at the same location that just so happens it wouldn’t be possible for players to play in both?

I think what he is saying is, if you did that, you would HAVE to let them play in both, even if you dq’d them every game/round.

If you want it to be officially IFPA at least… :joy:

Interesting. That sounds like a nightmare. Haha

This is what we do every year on the day of state champs. Someone runs the alternative “state chumps” tournament at the exact same time as state champs, such that it is impossible to play both. This came up after having a discussion with Josh about the viability of a consolation tourney for those who didn’t qualify for states, and running into this exact issue.

Our weekly league did this for a while. It was alright. We all had the decency to not put @YeOldPinPlayer and @Law through any sort of play in em both shenanigans although looking back we definitely should have!!

The events run around Pittsburgh during Pinburgh week aren’t run by the Replay staff, they’re run by other TDs (some of them are Replay staff, but the tournies aren’t official Replay events). Are you suggesting that Replay staff should be running more events around Pinburgh week? I think they’re pretty busy.

But you don’t have to make concessions that make it possible to play in both. When the tournies are in two different venues this is easily seen, it’s only when they occur in the same venue that the issue comes up. Just set rules about being present as others have suggested and stick to them.

Sounds like there’d be a market for a national “we didn’t qualify for any state championship” event on that day; only thing is to figure out where to best hold it.

If you have enough games you can host it at same location as SCS. You’d just want a dedicated bank for SCS qualifiers.

This is accurate. We did a month or so testing out a “rolling league” format where every week would be finals for the prior week’s qualifying as well as qualifying for the subsequent week, such that if you were in finals that week you’d not play to be in finals the following week.

The intent was try and give the not-world-class players a chance to win something once in a while as we got a ton of feedback that it was discouraging to lose to the same small group of super competitive players every week.

We found that the format was confusing for people to track, reduced head count in the individual events (8 people in a side tourney out of the main participant pool), and didn’t serve the original purpose, so we stopped doing it.

We had better results by cutting down the number of games, particularly during finals. Anyone can have a good game or six in a night, and we went from 3 people winning every league in 2018 to 9 unique winners in the last two months with a shorter finals format.
