Managing the Course - When to play aggressively/conservatively?

My personal nemesis version of this question is knowing when to be aggressive with nudging/tilting. At most tournaments that aren’t Pinburgh, I spend the entire tournament with a mental background task devoted to learning how much movement I can do on each machine without bumping the tilt ring. But when you’re in a Sudden Death situation… screw that! Unless you KNOW that your bonus will make the difference, you should not be draining ball 3 without tilting. But personally I have a really hard time overcoming the training I gave myself in the previous N rounds of the tournament to avoid tilting, to now flip the switch and say that I’m willing to tilt to save my life. This is one of my most frustrating faults at low-to-mid level events.
