You got hosed on that last game for sure, but obviously played great to be in that position.
Itās hard when everyone is so gracious and supportive. The finals of a tournament is just watching a string people you like and admire being eliminated!
Hello, A-restricted player that had a bad day one reporting in. I took a 1 in round 1 and went to bed 30-30. I then played my ass off on day 2 against ALL A-division players, won 41 points, and just missed playoffs.
I have no problems with being restricted based on past performance (I made A-finals last year) and Iām totally going to take whatever WPPRs Iāve earned for my tied-for-45th result. On the other hand, had I not been restricted (by performance or rank) I would have landed in C and also would have taken whatever I earned there.
Iām having trouble articulating a wrap-up here, but basically I feel if you have success one year, asking for a repeat before you can go down divisions seems sensible, just as itās sensible for non-restricted people to be allowed to continue on day 2 in a division lower than they āshouldā be in if they play badly on day 1.
As a player in the finals Saturday, I found it difficult and maybe a bit of oversight that there were no scheduled breaks over 5 rounds. Not sure why they canāt just schedule those rounds in a similar fashion to Thursday and Friday. I was really hungry after about 4 hours of intense finals action but it would be another 3.5 hours until I bombed out in the semis and finally got a rest.
VIP did not have water. That and coffee would have been great. Otherwise we had couches and tables, Spider-Man and Star Trek, and of course, Ringer. It was nice to have a place to leave your stuff while you played and Iām not the only one who napped on one of those couches. Overall, almost worth it, especially when you factor in the second (first?) chance at tickets.
My first pinburgh. My experience was great, tainted only by the disappointment in my own performance. I actually started to have a lot of fun once the pinburgh banks opened up for free play and I got a chance to play so many wonderfully maintained games.
If I have one complaint itās thereās no chance to feel out tilts on games where tilt ends game.
Since I donāt get out and play much these days, this was my first Pinburgh where I wasnāt A-restricted. In fact, I didnāt have any restriction. Fortunately, AFAIR Iāve always made the cut anyway even with the occasional horrible round thrown in (scored a 1 vs Donavan, Levi, and Riel this year, had a 2 a couple years ago). Obviously things went OK for me after that, but it was at that point (after getting the 1) where I was basically feeling like āwell, Iām not sandbagging, Iām actually trying to play, so if I wind up where I wind up I guess Iāll keep playing.ā There were 998 players by the end so obviously a couple dropped out, but I basically my conclusion was that if I couldnāt hang with a group like round 3, what was I going to do in the finals of A anyway even if I made it? Iām just not as good as I thought I was.
I understand the case for dropping out, it was going through my head as well. But I paid my money like everyone else, so I just went with the flow.
If it were up to me, I would happily take an A restriction every time, but Iām probably an extreme outlier of someone whoād like to play way more than he does and would probably do OK if I did. Iāve wondered if Replay let everyone pick a restriction, how many would pick A. I suspect itās way more than I think it would be (and they probably know this for a fact), and everyone is motivated for their own, and likely different, reasons, and it would probably skew things very strangely (to the point of possibly having dozens in A with wins in the 20s). By all means, keep the WPPR and specific performance-based minimum restrictions, but it would be interesting (to me anyway) to let people pick higher restrictions.
No matter what, I had a great time as always. Thanks to the countless people who put this thing on from techs to TDs to booth workers to planners and management. I cannot comprehend the total amount of work involved, and Iām OK with that, but know that itās appreciated.
And sorry for this very tired overly stream-of-consciousness post.
Decent couches, much more comfortable than the standard convention center chairs.
The area was monitored by event staff at all times, so felt comfortable leaving small personal items there while we played.
As always, loved spending time with my pinball family. Congrats again to @sk8ball for his commanding victory, and to @ryanwanger for his Intergalactic victory! Who won WIPT?
HUGE THANKS to every single person who contributed in small or large ways to create one of the absolute best weekends of the year. Everything ran so smoothly, games played great, never waited for more than a minute or so for a TD or tech. You are all rock stars.
But if some random silly guest happens to come to the event bringing a couple dozen cases of Costco water bottles, thatās not Replay Foundationās fault, right?
Played my first Pinburgh and had a great time! Thank you to everyone responsible for putting it on. I will certainly be back with some experience and hopefully a better result than this time around
