For the curious: a “barely passing grade” would be a “D”. An ancient language you might have taken is Latin. In the Latin Roman Numeral system, “D” represents the number 500.
The Star Trek quote is from the episode, “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield.” In it, Commissioner Bele, played by Frank Gorshin [remember the original Riddler from the TV series and Batman 66?], has taken control of the Enterprise and is reluctant to give it back to Kirk. At one point, Kirk asks if the ship is back on the course he wants and is told by Spock, no, we’re now moving in a circular path. To which Mr. Scott observes, “and at Warp 10, that’s goin’ nowhere mighty fast.” Taking a circular path and going mighty fast are what you do at the Indy 500.
