I hate any change that discourages playing. Intergalactic is a classic example. Many choose not to play because they were focused on pinburgh, but others through in a few entries for fun and came like 400, killing efficiency. I don’t like making people select their tournaments.
Imagine a kid from Appleton WI playing good and not at District 82.
Imagine
One event per location counting per year is a horrible idea…there aren’t even 20 unique locations near me within a few hours of Chicago…there probably aren’t even 10. A very large portion of players are not going to travel all over the country to find 20 events a year, and no one is going to want to go to monthly local events if only a single result is going to count. People are always talking about X change killing the competitive crowds but then stuff like this gets suggested as a fix smh. The only thing that needs to happen is the more prestigious events need to have their points buffed. WPPR farms are a good thing and people need to stop using that term negatively. A place with a massive amount of machines running tons of tourneys is rare and should be celebrated and protected. Capping wpprs and locations is not the way, buffing the largest events each year is. If you win a D82 event with 130 players you get 70 wpprs, if you win Expo you get 140. Win 20 events at D82 with 130 players you get 1400 wpprs, win 20 certified events like Expo you get 2800 wpprs. With a change like that after a few years the rankings will properly reflect an elite local player versus an elite player that travels all over the world playing(and finishing highly) in the biggest events.
If one event only counts per location then that should include a major like INDISC as well
You only posted 3 unique locations . . . find 17 more or we will be forced to not believe Neil is good at pinball.
Everyone: can we please use other examples of proposed changes besides just Neil?
Please take the negative focus off of a 17-year old kid. Now.
Use the change on my ranking as an example. Or Werdrick’s. Or Bowden’s. Or Travis’.
5 out of 20 so far for a total of 163.49 WPPR’s!
I will manually update Neil’s proper rank to 394th. This is easily updated with additional evidence of non-D82 performance
Neil played at expo and finished 28th in both the main and classics at Chicago expo.
He would have likely made the main at Free Play Florida but he couldn’t do anymore entries since he was playing in the classics finals till 1am which he finished 1st. He was qualified for main but bleed out. Finished 37th.
We accept that D82 is inferior to every place known to every pinball community outside of Wisconsin (and then probably still some inside of Wisconsin)
Neil is probably not a top ten player. I can accept that. Maybe he can accept that.
Change the rankings as you see fit.
I just think it is funny how the same people that Bitxh about D82 and the Wppr farm that are the same people that sign up for the events.
If the rankings are seriously that screwed up then just make the changes now. Don’t wait for 2023.
He’s 8th . . . everyone else needs to accept that.
Rules changes are coming, and Neil will have the same opportunity as everyone else to compete and earn whatever ranking he gets by the end of 2023.
Back on thread topic . . . here’s the current proposed change list for v5.8:
Overview of Changes for 2023 (v5.8)
-
Updated TGP rules
- Events now have the ability to grade out to 150% value versus the previous 100% max value that was in place. This will give some additional events that go ‘above and beyond’ with respect to the number of games played for their league or tournament. Previously 25 meaningful games played at 4% each would hit that 100% max. This will now be 38 meaningful games played at 4% each to hit this new 150% max.
-
Event Value increases for various classes of events
- Majors –> Previously the IFPA World Pinball Championship, PAPA World Pinball Championships, European Pinball Championships, Pinburgh Match Play Championship and THE OPEN had an event weight of 150%. This will be increased to 200% for 2023.
- IFPA Championship Series events –> Previously these events had a event weight of 125%. This will be increased to 150% for 2023. This includes the following events:
– Any IFPA Country Championship Series final, Any IFPA State and Provincial Championship final, IFPA North American Pinball Championship, Any IFPA European Championship Series event along with the ECS Final, IFPA Pin-Masters Championship, IFPA Heads-Up Pinball Championship, IFPA Power100 Championship, Stern Pro Circuit Final
-

b) Limited Herb/Card – minimum 24 attempts with minimum best 12 games being counted,
minimum 20 hours of qualifying time.
d) Unlimited Herb/card – minimum 20 hours of qualifying time, minimum 5 games being counted.
e) Match Play formats (4-player groups) require minimum of 20 qualifying games.
f) Head to head formats require minimum of 40 qualifying games.
g) 24 finalists minimum (up from 16) – Same finals format requirement as 2022

j) Maximum length of the tournament is 4 consecutive days.
k) Finals for the top 16 cannot start on the same day that Qualifying starts.
l) Finals portion of the tournament must consist of one of the following approved formats: PAPA style match play rounds (minimum of 3 games per round) or IFPA style head-to-head play (minimum best of 5 matches per round). All game choices during finals must be made by the players.
- Increased event weight for IFPA Certified event weight to 125%. Addition of IFPA Certified+ tournaments with an event weight of 150%. Updated criteria of eligibility:
-
Group play formats that utilize the “Multi-Matchplay” style of play (players play in parallel across multiple machines rather than serially in the 4-player matches) will no longer receive the 2X bonus for 4-player groups.
-
Flip Frenzy formats, also referred to as Pinball! Pinball! Pinball! format will now be graded based on the (AVERAGE number of matches played / divided by 2) by all players in the field. One-Ball Flip Frenzy formats will be graded based on the AVERAGE number of matches played/ divided by 3).

Any tournaments that eliminate games due to time (this is often done by switching to “all Classics” when a tournament is running long) will no longer earn TGP after the point in time in which games are eliminated. For tournaments that run into this problem often, we recommend you changing the format to a lower amount of games played, or eliminating any long playing games at the start of the tournament.
I could be wrong, but I don’t anyone specifically means D82 the establishment, this could have happened anywhere and received the same fire.
Personally nothing about what I say is a shot at D82. Between you and Eric who I have personally talked with and thanked you for everything you’ve done is something I stand by. What you guys do for the community is awesome. I truly appreciate the love and labor going into it, I enjoy playing there a lot. This is more of we haven’t had anything like D82 pop up and make these waves like you guys have done.
I am interested in more of the best way to get true rankings and I myself have a bit of an obsession with optimization. Will I still come to D82? Absolutely.
Nationals and Pinmasters will be at D82. Better cut that in half.
We’re good here. I’ve already contacted the city of De Pere to make each separate room within D82 a different address. This will go a long way towards helping this 20 unique addresses problem
If Erik can find a way to get games into each bathroom . . .we’re in great shape.
Distric82, 83, 84, and 85. Let’s goooooo!
“No one specifically mentions d82”
D82 in reference to Eric and Tom. Meaning this could have happened to anyone who had the ability and resources that D82 has. It’s not a personal attack on D82 themselves. It’s a product of environment. I was removing the personal attacks on themselves.
Power 100 still looks right, who cares about overall still?
Overall rankings should take into account where pinball is being played, if that’s D82 and a couple European tournaments then tough shit, go there or start your own tournaments.
Group play formats that utilize the “Multi-Matchplay” style of play (players play in parallel across multiple machines rather than serially in the 4-player matches) will no longer receive the 2X bonus for 4-player groups.
I think both of these rules are bad, I don’t see why this needs to be regulated and specifically in this way. If you feel that both multi-play and classics (or moderns with ball saves turned on) are not efficient in showing the skill of the players then ban them completely.
