when i reply to someone specifically their avatar does not appear in the upper right hand corner of the post the way it does for other direct replies in the thread. does it do this for everyone?
The answer is, it depends on context. The basic gist as I see it from years of observation is that any post directly under another post is assumed to be a response to the previous one. If you respond to the not-last post, then the avatar shows up.
