I’m dreaming of a 12 hr stream then 12 hr tourney. Or 24/24 hahah. We’ll see. May be coming to a Columbus near you…If you’re in Ohio now that Clancy’s is out @PinballNarcissist
right now we have 18 games, could prob get that up to 22 or so, i want to have some on reserve for replacements and I want to always have some games open so there is ‘less’ waiting
Waiting just comes from that one group that takes 2 hours to play 3 games while everyone else takes an hour
And when that group just happens to be playing Victory!
How did you guys combat this? I love this format but was wondering how to address this potential issue.
since it is a timed tournament can you have timed rounds? Or nerf any long play games
Moderator note: I edited the subject line of this thread so as not to make people (read, people like me hopped up on cold medicine) think that registration for this year’s 24 Hour Battle was open yet.
Thanks Zoe registration will be sometime in May. I’ll be sure to start a new thread when we lock in that date. As of now just the date for the event is locked in.
Yes we thought we had most setup good for top players but they always find a way! Especially for us we have a lot of unique games not in lots of tournaments so the pros quickly go to town to find the safest way to grind out points and drag things along. This tournament made me sell my Victory I loved!
Times rounds don’t work. Every player needs to play the same number of games each round or the points aren’t equal each round.
First thing we started with was making custom medals like you get for finishing a marathon. Someone must have a photo of them, I don’t currently have on on my phone.
The only way to get one of these is to play every ball of every game of every round. If you slept through one game no medal for you. People seem to take pride in having one of these.
That kept everyone playing. Doesn’t make them try their best though. Next thing we did is made bounties every round for a perfect score of 9. Even at low levels you can shoot for those.
Next step was since we don’t have a finals technically we make a side pot finals sorta thing for the final round. Starting from the bottom group we offer up 10$ bounty for the person in the group of players ranked 97-100 who win their group that round. Next group 93-96 have a 15$ bounty. We do this all the way up to 2nd to last group ending at around 125$ bounty for winning your group. This seemed to encourage people who maybe at the bottom to try harder and get up a few groups at least as there is a higher prize bounty for winning a group a little higher than where you are. And that final round everyone sure is playing as hard as they can. Final 3 games. Medal in sight and possibly a cash prize if they can at least beat the three people they are playing.
On top of all the medals, perfect score bounties, final round bounties we still offer a decent amount of prize money and trophies to the top finishers. Besides a small coin drop fee for the entire weekend of using the machines on freeplay and the facility every other dollar and then some goes right back into prizes/trophies. I easily know how papa events can run at a loss all the time.
If I could suggest something for 24 Hour it would be to make “banks” of assigned games instead of full randomization. Someone could end up a group of the longest playing games in the tournament, delaying the next round.
And take out Hollywood Heat.
Already taken care of!
The previous reason for not having premade locked in banks was we don’t have the room to store a dozen or so extra machines to cover replacements for each “era” for several banks. That makes us double up on a single game in 2 banks and that gets very messy and confusing on our end to organize. We tried this one year. Not good.
With the help of @haugstrup great software this year we will label each game into one of 3 groups. Likely by era and then each round the software will create a unique bank for each group etc round that is balanced. Obviously our collection isn’t perfectly 1/3 EM, 1/3 SS and 1/3 DMD so we will take into acount how long each game plays and use the to help break up category of games with the era.
Not having same banks every round will help too with situations were people play the same bank multiple times in a row. Games may get repeated for a player but it’s single games not whole banks. Makes each round feel a bit more unique.
Come on! Stopping taking the fun out of all my weird games. Maybe some 2" flippers on the bottom too. Would that help?
Hollywood Heat owns
Thanks Chuck. Looking to hopefully increase the size a bit this year.
I like the size so I don’t feel too Flava Flav when I wear it out to impress the ladies
Yeah, BOYYEEE!
I want some one to wear all 3 of their medals this year as an intimidation factor
